It is difficult for people to get fresh produce in inner city areas.
Food distributors prefer to deliver food to large suburban grocery
stores rather than the smaller stores found in the inner city. When
fresh produce is found, it is very expensive.
This results in
people purchasing the wrong foods that lead to many health problems. We
partner with the Cleveland Foodbank and Elizabeth Baptist Church to
distribute fresh, healthy food to the Slavic Village area.
We
typically distribute food on the fourth Saturday of each month, and
Elizabeth Baptist Church distributes food on the second Satuday of each
month. This means that people in the community receive free fresh
produce twice each month.
We have opportunities to help with food packaging or with food distribution.
FOOD PACKAGING
The Cleveland Foodbank truck usually arrives at Elizabeth Baptist Church around 7:30 am, and the food packaging begins at 8:00 am. Depending on weather, we may be outside in the parking lot or inside the gymnasium. The truck delivers pallets of food. In this phase, we are setting up tables, bagging food, and preparing for distribution
FOOD DISTRIBUTION
Produce distribution begins at 10:00 am. It is at this time that we have the opportunity to encourage and pray with people in the community. We need volunteers to help with registration, restocking tables, helping people go through the lines, and advertising by holding signs on East 55th Street. People wanting to help with these activities should arrive at 9:45 am.
